In desperation Merlin banished Mordred to the underworld and cast a spell consigning Arthur and his Knights to a long, dark sleep, to be awakened if Mordred ever escaped. Fifteen centuries later, a meddling scientist makes contact with Mordred and agrees to free him in return for power.
